“ [A]n industry that produces, processes and markets food and fuel, largely in response to the daily demand of consumers within a town, city, or metropolis, on land and water dispersed throughout the urban and peri-urban area, applying intensive production methods, using and reusing natural resources and urban wastes to yield a diversity of crops and livestock.”

Facts

50% of the world’s population lives in cities.[6]

800 million people are involved in urban agriculture world-wide and contribute to feeding urban residents.[7]

Low income urban dwellers spend between 40% and 60% of their income on food each year.[8]

By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million or more. To feed a city of this size – at least 6000 tonnes of food must be imported each day.[9]

With the increasing costs of food, and the misuse of cropping lands for bio fuels, Urban Agriculture seems an obvious solution for importing food, which helps to generate employment and decrease costs, and reduce contamination produced to transport food across states and countries.

Any major technology or process that leverages the adoption of Urban Agricutlure and Horticulture will gain great economic and social value. From Guerilla Gardening and Local Markets to Urban and PeriUrban Crops.

There exists a great development and social opportunity for business in urban irrigation, distribution

In Mexico cities like Monterrey, Guadalupe, Santa Catarina etc, there are city wide local markets called Mercado de Abastos, yet they import from long distances and while they offer an open market solution (free prices) they operate under un-optimal conditions and are centralized.

For a deeper insight please read more at Wikipedias references its practically a whole argument in favour of urban agriculture systems, for economic and social development, including wellfare, health and pollution.

We have a space crisis at campus, there is no space for researchers, scientists and entrepenurs and they pull this kind of shit !

Then they started to let restaurant franchises in.. (ok not that bad we sometimes need to eat)

And now the first official Apple Store in Mexico will be inside campus. First in Monterrey and then all other campus in the country.

Gilad left a question in another post, the answer turn out to be so extend that i had to make it a post.

HJ - I’m curious - do u know of specific areas in Mexico which are planned to receive the device? Any gov’t initiative to buy a bunch of them and distribute? As cool as this project is, I wonder if its not better to use up all that money it cost to develop and put it directly in the hands of those in need - make sure education in their schools is better, make sure kids are given food at school, make sure they have clothing, etc. The basics… before handing them a shiny new laptop.

Hey Gilad, its great to hear from you.Government is actually evaluating classmates and XO’s (the few xo government has are thanks to carlitos fatboy slim) I don’t know officially where is the ministry of education placing the laptops. But we know for sure that Carlos Slim spent 70 million for 250,000 XOs, which will be delivered to Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl in Mexico State, and Tuxtla Gutiérrez in Chiapas.Your question is indeed very polemic pervasive among developing countries, why give a laptop when then have nothing to eat.Well, in México its a difficult question to answer, not all México is a starving community of indigenous people. And while assuring the basic needs for ALL Mexicans should be a priority, such responsibility is in hands of SEDESOL (Ministry for Social Development) whereas Education is for SE (Ministry of Education). I do agree that they are a lot of schools specially in rural communities that need a lot of attention, (i usually sleep in one when i travel to rural areas) both in infrastructure and human capital. I can’t speak for Government but I believe they think an XO will increase the skills that the current education provides, or rather… provide an “global education”. They are currently in some states, projects that involve this two organizations to provide basic attention to children, such as free breakfast.I just realized that even if we delivered XO’s to all children, the education system is not prepared for such a leap. Teachers lack of any information literacy, and are lead by a corrupt leader that has for long stopped their own development.Somehow i fear that XO might end up like the Enciclomedia Project, surrounded by corruption dubious contracts and a terrible operation plan (Enciclomedia director Felipe Bracho, just left us an open message in another post, sorry is in spanish try babel fish of google language tools). They even try to silence a lot of critics out there deleting content from wikipedia. No matter how much we invest in tech, without a clear evolution of our education models, all similar efforts (tech related) will be pretty much a failure. We had a round table last week, within the global knowledge based development week, (the first knowledge cities summit). and discussed the topic “Education for knowledge Societies” we had David Garza, the dean of information technologies and engineering in Monterrey Tech, Cristobal Cobo, the head of FLACSO Education platform and Gabriel Kent Social Media Technologist.David shared with us the phenomena of new technology in education, with each new tech, education organizations thought that all of their problems where solved, (radio, tv, internet, and now ubiquitous computing.) it seems we are about to make the same mistake.Cristobal Cobo, stressed the relevance of developing adaptive experts rather than routine experts, (be able to learn, unlearn, adapt knowledge to new context etc.)And Kent, was merciless with closed intellectual property and non-common education goods. If somehow we can manage to combine this three elements, inside a education model for knowledge society, we will be able to make it.Betty Huergo, head of the American Institute of Monterrey has already started a pilot program and even including a small public school to share their innovations. I think its a great way to go.Ubiquitous Computing, is just a challenge of many that our education revolutions requires.I don’t know if its the most urgent one, but its the easiest one at the moment

1) Correct Teaching Minds… maybe i would start by, teaching teachers how to teach, so learners learn how to learn (hahaha, no really) Our teachers still think, that they job is to transfer knowledge. We need to educate our teachers so they can help students to be active and perpetual learners.

2) FOSE (free and open source education)… Its IMPERATIVE that we open up the intellectual property that we have and include open knowledge in our education system , it will increase the quality, lower the costs, and help our people understand what knowledge based economies stand for.

3) Information Literacy… You would be amazed by the lack of information skills that affects the education system in Mexico.

4) Technology Infrastructure… ok once we have all of the above, we can start taking care of the XO, personal media players, and information portals etc.

It can’t be done at the same timeframe for all of Mexico, but at least we should make sure that any effort on any community doesn’t lack of all the components, if not, we will once again, throw our money, time and our children’s future to the trash. To evolve our education system is a relevant issue against poverty, (its the only way we have to fight poverty) while we shouldn’t forget the basic need of our people, we cannot afford not to try to evolve it. I just hope we don’t leave it in hands of the wrong people. Maybe its time the private sector and civil society take problems in their hand instead of trusting our most valuable resource to the government…

Today as i started my Monday session on the web, my mind paralyzed for over it seamed more than 5 minutes in emptiness…I was trying to fully understand what i has just realized.Even within our own education rescue plans, the vices of our idiosyncrasy that narrow our minds have seem to take effect. Is so evident that our own education programs obstruct our cultural development? Was it possible that the own leaders of the project vandalize their information?Mr. Alejandro Guzman kindly revitalized my almost lost interest on Enciclomedia Project. After my brief response i decided to go back to my information sources and look for some updates, that is how i found out about Colin Bryton and his excellent notes on the topic.Further more I return to Wikipedia with the hope to see some new knowledge on the project. For my surprise I saw myself before a sad surprise.Almost all content from the article had been deleted. Only copy-paste content from the governments’ web-sites appear along with a lame excuse in defence of the project where an discussion related to the content edition should be.My first reaction was obviously think of our governments’ party. After all they demonstrated an affection to hide manipulated and cheat on their own reports. But I fought against my first instincts and decided to do a proper analysis of the situation.I, personally am not a very savvy wikipedia user. so i went to the irc channel and presented the case… within no more than 2 minutes the content was restored along with the previous discussion pages (one point for open democracy). After the damaged had been reverted, I was still curious about this mysterious changes. So I went and dug some more.So it happened to be that our arbitrary editor user with ip: 148.245.60.60 was asked not to edit the article in such manner or would be banned. Ok an ip.. we have something now.

Hola, 148.245.60.60. Gracias. Tano ¿comentarios? 23:06 7 mar 2007 (CET)Â

Whats even more, whois 148.245.60.60 guides us directly to:

owner:Â Â Â Â Â Â INSTIT LATINOAMERICANO DE LA COMUNICACION EDUCATIVAownerid:Â Â Â Â MX-ILLC1-LACNICaddress:Â Â Â Â ARENAL NO. 550.address:Â Â Â Â CIUDAD DE MEXICO, DF 16020country:Â Â Â Â MXÂ

Same IP and whois information that of our kindest Alejandro Guzman, who works for Enciclomedia. Where does all this information takes me…Well… it seems that someone inside the Enciclomedia Project and ILCE has been investing a lot of effort trying to hide all information that doesn’t defend the project. If it wasn’t enough with all the political problems they have found themselves with corruption administration and logistics. They keep playing the game…They deleted:

Critics

References

Detailes on Documents and Names

Links to further information

etc.

The only way to gain the confidence, trust and support from the people is talking clearly, open and transparently. As i once said… We are not the same country nor generation as we were in the 80’s. You can’t control people by manipulating information, not in this era where openness and collaboration is a modus operandi. We all want Enciclomedia to work, but hiding mistakes wont make it work…Open people… think open. When you share you problems and mistakes, people will learn from them and will help you solve them.

Somos jóvenes, no ingenuos.

This have been some of the last searches, many of them regarding Enciclomedia.Im sorry to upset you guys, but i dont provide any content regarding enciclomedia mainly for the following reasons:

1. Its copyrighted: yes… indeed, and you might not distribute it for “el hermano mayor” would go sue-crazy on your ass. It seems someone thought that having closed and proprietary material for PUBLIC schools wasn’t a good idea.2. It’s based on commercial software: yes… you guessed it, good old balmer sold lots of licenses of windows, office and encarta to our schools so if you want content for your schools you would probably have to pay more for it. besides im unsure if uploading your own content to the platform is possible.3. I personally don’t endorse enciclomediaEven if it was open source, free and worked as they told it would. Goverment has invested big time in this technology, but has made a lot of mistakes of conceptions. Enciclomedia doesn’t change the way children learn nor help them develop requiered skills. If you revise the “white book” report of results, you might actually find that the children that used enciclomedia did worse than those who didn’t.

It uses the same old paradigm of teacher and a blackboard and discourse. the only real difference is that now drawings are fancy and materials are even more expensive. If you are a teacher looking for material for your course i personally would tell you to go open. Nothing tells you care for your students like open knowledge. Give them firefox, teach them how to use wikipedia (damn install your own for your class) introduce them to mit’s open coursware. If its not possible for you lack of internet you could always get a very cheap computer and install edubuntu and use open office and previously downloaded content.Theres a complete world of open knowledge out there, please do free your children from governments burocracy. Help them build their very own knowledge and learn to be responsble for their education. hey you might even get interested in Ukini. If you need any specific resources and references let us know, we will gladly help your school shift to open society paradigms.cheers and good look to all teachers

Descarga El Libro Blanco
