I’m sorry guys, really, but this news is simply either hilarious or really sad…
So it goes that now Mexican Telecommunication Monopoly “Telmex” has complained against the Telecommunications Regulation Office, saying that the cable companies forbid them to enter the “Triple Play” game and its unfair business.
They assure that cable companies are guilty of stopping the industry of growing with their practices. (as if they high costs of service have nothing to do with mexico’s underdevelopment)
To give you a basic idea of who TELMEX is:
- It was privatized to Carlos Slim, (Worlds second Richest Man, soon to be the first in two years)in a mist of irregularities and power abuse
- Makes $15,971,506,352.09 on Revenue per year
- Mexico has the highest costs of telephone service for business and international residential calls, and the highest cost of broadband internet for businesses
- High costs of telecommunications have caused an erosion of Mexico’s competitiveness compared with Asian and European countries, leaving growth of per capita income lagging behind them
- Ninety percent of the telephone lines in Mexico are operated by Telmex. The mobile company, Telcel, which Carlos Slim Helú also controls, operates almost eighty percent of all the country’s cellphones.
- Telmex is second in the National List of most demanded companies in Mexico.
Any company that is willing to compete with Telmex has to rent their network, or use wireless networks. For years Telmex has fought to keep phone communications and regulations to its favor. They even are the mayor provider of broadband internet in the country, with which blocked IP Phone services for a long time.
They claim to be ready to enter the Triple Play business, but laws and cable companies simply are “unacceptable“.
Now it seems ridicule that sucha gaint is pleading that the tiny players are not playing fair.
